Céline Thiriot

Céline THIRIOT is an Associate Professor of Political Science at Sciences Po Bordeaux and a specialist in political transitions in sub-Saharan Africa. She has worked in particular on issues of democratisation and demilitarisation of power, comparing the process in five countries: Burkina Faso, Congo (Brazzaville), Ghana, Mali, Togo.

Dr. Thiriot’s research focuses on the consolidation processes (democratic or authoritarian) of post-transition regimes in sub-Saharan Africa, and specifically on the institutionalisation of new regimes: role and place of the armed forces in new regimes, nature and role of civil society, electoral process, institutional or unconventional innovations in the management of social, political and electoral conflicts. Her interest in the issue of political risk and insecurity in Africa has led to her participation in several research projects on democratic transitions, Islam in the Sahel, elites, armed forces and conflicts, elections, comparative politics, etc.
